I can see the benefit of rotation, but then I don't post gas prices while I'm moving/driving or stopped at a light, so I can tolerate the non-rotating app.

The iOS / iPhone and Android apps are somewhat different. The iOS / iPhone app does not follow the phone's rotation. It only handles portrait mode, so with the phone in landscape mode for his navigation app, the GasBuddy app is in the wrong orientation. And inferring from the post, he may have the phone in a dash mount to make using it with the navigation app easier, so removing and re-orienting the phone would be difficult.
