If things haven't gotten bad enough from the cold weather, add one more thing into the mix: refineries. Some Texas refineries have been reporting weather-related issues as of late, temporarily adding concern to traders already balancing many issues.

Preliminary reports show that Motiva shut a unit at its Port Arthur, Texas location, a facility that has a total capacity of 290,000 barrels per day.

In addition, Valero, ExxonMobil, and Shell all reported issues as well. Valero shut a unit at its 315,000bpd plant in Corpus Christi this weekend, and blamed the cold weather for the shutdown of another unit and other malfunctions. Corpus Christi woke up to temperatures of 24F on Friday, over 20 degrees under the normal for this...

Just the threat of cold is enough to drive prices up.

Cableman31 has a point why do we have problem when places that are colder do not. Why do not we learn and prevent these issues.

Big deal. Houston was in the 20's the other day. Canada can be -20 and they keep working. Texas, you have a lot to learn. Stop being babies and work like men.

dks2000 is likely right about the worker issue but if kept more refineries open then less likely for all to be hit with issues at once. Here in Canada a major Shell refinery is closing in Eastern Canada which will definitely lead to more unstable prices in the future & higher prices overall as Canada moves further into importing gas from the US.
This & the above will lead to increased profits - overall that is, the one plant will suffer a bit but the margin rise on all Big Oil's bus. will more than offset the one location.

I don't claim to know all about refineries, but I can guess why they had troubles. The refinery is more than just a machine that runs. It takes people to run it. If the cold weather affected enough people getting to work (remember down here in Texas we're not used to sub-freezing), then there may not have been enough people to reliably run the refinery.

I'd bet that shutting down these plants did not increase their profits. If the refinery is not running, then it's not getting any revenue - if I remember correctly, about 25 - 30 cents per gallon of gasoline goes to refining, so if no output - no revenue.

The refiners have been in this business for a long long time and have been through cold weather before... they are simply using the weather as an excuse to trying reducing supply to hold prices higher than they "should" be, taking a profit from us...

Could some of these incidents to the oil refinaries also include the lack of attenttion and care we have been giving thes while we have been reliaing more on importers for oil supplies?

"Blamed" the weather is the correct word because caused cannot be used. If the cold caused a shutdown there would be no refineries north of the Mason-Dixon line.

They had these problems in the past and that did not stop production... so what has changed now??? Answer: The business mentality that they are no longer serving a buying public but instead are serving the profits going to their back pocket.

Blah, blah, blah. Anything to raise the price of gas. They should have had these problems a long time ago and fixed it, but no, now in the worse time they find all these problems and have to shut down refineries. All that will do is raise the price of gas, just when it was going down.

This is why we should have diverse refineries across the USA, close to where we are extracing oil. Oh, that right we have the not in my back yard and greenie issues, and the progressives do not want any progress in making it easier to get gas.

What did the Dems change their name to progressives when they only block any progress that we could have in most of our problem areas?
