The Department of Energy released its weekly report on the condition of petroleum inventories in the United States today.

Here are some highlights:

Crude oil inventories increased by 1.9 million barrels to a total of 356.2 million barrels. At 355.9 million barrels, inventories are 3.3% lower than last year, but remain above average.

Gasoline inventories increased by 3.6 million barrels to a total of 222.4 million barrels. At 224.9 million barrels, inventories are 4.8% higher than last year. This is a good sign, showing refiners are beginning to boost output ahead of the summer driving season.

Distillate inventories increased by 2.1 million barrels to a total of 148.9 million barrels. At 148.9 million...

They have an entire federal government agency who can't summarize the cause and effect of gasoline and fuel prices; so I don't feel so badly that I can't figure it out.

TerryLee -- yes, it would be nice if President Obama would stay stateside and do his job, but since many of those who elected him into office back in 2008 have "changed" their view of him lately, he might be better off abroad. As far as gas prices go, even though both oil and gas inventories are up, the greedy speculators are still able to manipulate the price of gas by making it appear to all of us that the inventories of both oil and gas are constantly in a state of influx, thus the reason why prices go up on day and down the next.

Crude oil, gas and distillate inventories are up. So why is the price of crude oil up? And why aren't the prices of distillates falling somewhat?

Crude oil inventories increased
Gasoline inventories increased
Distillate inventories increased
Refinery utilization jumped
total commercial inventories increased
Domestic production of oil is up
Net imports of oil are down
Overall gasoline demand is up

And gasoline prices are up!
Big oil and the refiners are creating false shortages by producing less fuel and raising prices at the pump.

And pump prices continue to rise!! According to these figures, there is no reason beyond market MANIPULATION (and a President & Congress whose agenda is contrary to the will of the electorate).

Refineries running at only 85.9% capacity & still inventories have increased. That screams "weak demand" however the price at the pump continues to rise even with inventories 4.8% greater than last year when the price was only $1.87. WTF!

Help me with Eonomics 101: Supply and Demand.

Supply of all types of oil is up.

Inventories of all types of oil is up.

Demand is down.

The worldwide economy is down.

Yet prices are up.

Maybe we need to drill some more.
