Everyone who's ever owned a vehicle knows to leave the vehicle in park if automatic, or to apply the e-brake (otherwise known as emergency brake or parking brake) or leave the car in gear in a manual to make sure the car doesn't roll away. I had a situation once where someone in my family left the e-brake off on a steep driveway and we came outside to see the car in the road. Thankfully no one had hit it. The poor fella in this video had the same experience- but he was right next to his car- and didn't notice anything. If you don't see the pictures or link to the video, be sure to visit the GasBuddy blog here for the link to this hilarious video and screen shots of what happened.

This guy and his experience at his local gas station...

Also if you don't own a vehicle; and Hurtz doesn't Avise you, they expect you earned a driver's license sometime.

It almost seems like he knew this was happening and WANTED it to happen. He looks back once when the car has vanished, and returns to his gas jug. When the bystanders rush to the scene, the driver casually saunters over to his car.

I would have raced over to my car!

my truck is an automatic. And last I checked, you can't even pull the key unless you have it in Park (if you put it in neutral and don't pull the parking brakes, then you deserve to pay the bill IMO).

as for the brakes, I know of many people who don't use it. On my stick shift, applying parking brakes is automatical. I feel as if I forgot something if I didn't pull that baby.

considering there are very few manual "stick" shift cars and trucks left on the road, it's no wonder that people forget about the e-brakes.

It’s called a parking brake or emergency brake and does not go by other name or abbreviation! What’s the matter with these people that run this site? A parking brake to be used each and every time the vehicle is parked, whether it’s an automatic or a manual transmission.

I'm usually diligent, but there are those moments where I can smile and say, "there, but for the grace of God, go I."

As for you arrogant or smug souls who think it could NEVER happen to you...
I hope there are video cameras around. They teach humility, a valuable trait.

This doesn't seem at all possible unless he put it in park and it wasn't fully engaged in park. Or he put it in neutral and hoped it wouldn't roll away.

I didn't think you could take the key out of an automatic tranny car if it wasn't in part or neutral. Who puts their automatic in neutral to park it? Sheesh.

I don't think I've ever left the parking brake off in my manual, but I have had the clutch engaged and foot off the brake on a slight decline and rolled into the car in front of me before.

No, I wasn't paying attention, I was in la-la-land. :)

A few years ago some Ford models with automatic transmissions were notorious for slipping into gear when the driver placed them into Park.
There were numerous injuries to drivers that were struck by the vehicle when they were pinned either to the garage door or the garage wall.

Turning off a Prius automatically sets the brake and putting it in gear automatically releases it. (Your foot is on the brake to put it in gear)

I had an old man who lived across the street from where I've got cows and his driveway has a decent slope to it. That old man had his car roll down the hill and through my fence 4 separate times before his son finally took the car away from him...

Most people call it a parking brake, but it use to be called the emergency brake because it was used when hydraulics failed in an emergency and can still be if you hold the release lever while applying the emergency brake pedal. We use to do this just to keep in practice and to stay sharp and on your toes. And yes it has come in very handy in the past when the pedal went to the floor when a master cylinder failed on me years ago. You can practice with it in an open lot or empty street sometime and one day it may save your life. But it should be set anytime your on an incline, and don't forget to turn those wheels in when your downhill, and out when it's uphill. Take it easy.

I agree, an IQ test should be integrated into the drivers' exam. And really for the safety of everybody a psycho test must be included to remove those whackoos behind the wheel.
