With the departure of Hurricane Alex, which had little impact on the oil industry, gasoline and oil futures began to fall late last week, and as July 4 came and went, retail prices have begun to move lower as well.

Going into the July 4 weekend, retail prices jumped to $2.78 mid-last week (a rise of 3-cents in one day as retailers took advantage of increased traffic). As the weekend progressed, retailers lowered their prices to an average of $2.74 on July 4. Today, the average price stands at $2.727- a decrease of a nickle in just a few days time.

We can expect retail prices to continue to fall through this week in most of North America, but prices may be slower to fall along the East Coast, as higher demand from power...

Yep, sure enough; July fourth has passed again; it is not over, it shall return, frequently. Gas stations were working; were the rest of you?

Powerstroke73L: then how do you explain the fact that oil has been at much lower prices and the pump prices are not reflecting it.

if you go back, barrel prices and pump prices used to reflect each other, although there is generally a 3 month lag time. Now, the price drops to $65 or $68 and three months later the pump prices go up because of some excuse. Up 10 cents today b/c of this or that, dropping slowly over the next three weeks by 4 cents only to spike again... how do you explain patterns like that as being not part of the greed culture in Pig Oil and Specutraitor circles? And it's been proven that Pig Banks are under Pig Oil's blanket, financing a lot of the specutraitors' transactions (and doing many themselves).

our prices have stayed at 2.59 for WEEKS...they don't fluctuate much at all when they do change; only 1 or 2 cents at a time.

One more thing.

The Tropics AREN'T quiet:

Atlantic Tropical Weather Outlook

This tropical wave has been ranging between a 30-to-50% chance of developing into a Tropical system since Alex made landfall in Mexico. It's current location is further north and east of Hurricane Alex's track through the Bay of Campeche.

The associated low pressure area has just emerged off the Yucatan Peninsula this morning, and pressure patterns over the northern Gulf/southern U.S. are such this time that the system won't be pushed westward into Mexico, if this pattern persists.

If the system tracks northward, it won't even have to develop into a hurricane to exponentially increase the oiling of the Northern Gulf coast.

Hey PD,
Want to "write" something that will get some press?

Write about the St. Louis area has these "routine" 20-to-30 cents-per-gallon price spikes EVERY TWO WEEKS.

They NEVER reflect movements in the price of crude oil, or even NYMEX futures prices. They al most always occur on Tuesday or Wednesday.

And true-to-form, yesterday morning prices spiked from $2.34 to $2.59

The question is - why?

I can't read two posts without seeing somebody blame "speculators" or "big Oil" for everything in this world. Come on people, try not to use te talking points.

Get rid of the speculators and you'll see prices drop.

And not until.

Gas prices will continue to rise through the Labor Day weekend, then we'll see it drop off until we see what type of winter, colder/warmer than normal, then we'll see which direction prices will go.

It should come down more at the pumps since the oil industry has been legally stealing regularly since before last winter.

We fellow gasoline consumers certainly got a break on this issue. Fortunately the weak tropical storm faded quickly.

The tropics will heat up and so will the prices. That seems odd with all the oil that is escaping now. After wells are drilled I guess the oil travels by pipes to the refiners, not sure on that one. But when a storm approaches the price rises because all the best refiners are located along the coast. We pay more in Florida because there is not pipeline and it must all arrive by barge. Conservation keeps your money in your pocket.

Not only should we conserve where we can, we really need to go the extra mile in buying the lower priced gas to let the retailers know that pennies do matter to us and we'll make our purchase based on that. I just don't understand how one station can sell gas for .10 more than the station across the street and stay in business!

Is it possible for prices at the pump to move even lower, during the summer months? We sure need some help here.

I haven't noticed more than about a two or three cents per gallon decrease at any station. Most of the stations along my route of travel have not changed at all.
