We've all got our own mental list of places where our antennae go up when we approach them because we know we're driving through speed traps; those special places where states allow police to rob motorists in the name of 'highway safety'...

Now groups dedicated to identifying the problem areas and opposing what they call "unfair driving taxes" are trying to make more people support traffic laws based on sound engineering principles and public consensus -- not political agendas.

The National Motorists Association (NMA), a nonprofit organization dedicated to stopping the use of traffic tickets to "generate revenue", ranks the U.S. cities with the highest number of speed traps.

Interestingly enough, NMA...

Gauley Bridge, West Virginia. It's a dirty, run down, little "has-been" of a town... but the cops drive shiny new black Chargers with Hemis.

Even the Google Maps car was pulled over. And yes, the photos are posted on Google maps.

When I drove from the Midwest to Washington State in 1980 we barely saw any state patrol cars until we crossed into Washington. After we crossed the Idaho/Washington border there were so many we thought there was a manhunt! We had been forewarned not to drive over the 55 mph speed limit once we arrived and we did not speed - troopers everywhere! It's not like that anymore because of budget cuts. Furthermore, the troopers were once the best-dressed in the country. After the economy went sour I saw one at my workplace whose uniform looked so shabby I was concerned that he was impersonating an officer. My co-worker's husband works in LE and she explained, nope- the budget cuts have forced a hit on their uniforms. Despite the budget cuts, they still do a great job at keeping our roads and communities safe.

RBob - "Sounds like many think laws in general suck..??"

Pass enough bad laws and have enough bad enforcement and pretty soon people start to think that all laws are bad.

A penny sales tax and 2 police cars, 2 radar guns and small towns in Oklahoma have all the revenue they need.

Hate speed traps. It would help if they would take the speedsters weaving in and out of traffic out of commission.

Well, when your in the city limits and you smell a pig farm, slow down because your near a driver-tax funded, gestapo-police run speed trap. Simply, reroute your trip and stay informed on their locations. If you have to drive through one, buckle-up and watch your speed. Take off your sun- glasses because you may look too content and happy and they may pull you over for that too.I mean the whole point of the speed traps isn't to address problematic speeders, but to trim the everyday commuters freedom. In other words, look like a robot, so they won't think they have change you into one. It's kind of like terrorism isn't it. No explosions or violence but it seems to have a similar affect on Freedom and Expression. Now!, is it too far a stretch to see that nine eleven was some type of inside job?

I know you people have some imagination, you should use it while you still can. If we let this continue, before long you will be punished and drugged just for thinking for yourself like some third world countries.

As a Michigan resident and one who is dead set against just about everything Governor "Slick" Rick Snyder and is gang of Republican legislators have done to our state the sooner we get rid of this gang of thieves the sooner Michigan residents will no longer be treated like second class citizens.

There's something sneaky about speed traps; it's a cash grab without any element of fairness - the psychopath of transportation law enforcement.

Michigan needs to catch the Illinois people speeding through our state at speeds exceeding 80 mph. Most of them also tailgate and have no respect for other drivers. Keep that crap in your own State as we have enough a-holes here already.

I would welcome a speed trap in front of my house - in fact they could sit right in my driveway and pull people over all day long. I am sick of people flying down the road like it is a freeway!
