Norwegian shipper: kill pirates 'on the spot'

Published February 16, 2011 | Associated Press

OSLO, Norway – A Norwegian shipping magnate was strongly criticized Wednesday for suggesting that pirates captured off the Horn of Africa should be sunk with their skiffs or executed on the spot.

In a newspaper op-ed, the 79-year-old founder of the Stolt-Nielsen shipping group, Jacob Stolt-Nielsen, said history shows that fighting piracy requires a gloves-off approach.

"When (piracy) implies a great risk of being caught and hanged, and the cost of losing ships and weapons becomes too big, it will decrease and eventually disappear," Stolt-Nielsen wrote Tuesday in Norwegian financial newspaper Dagens Naeringsliv.

I have no sympathy for pirates. Justice should be swift and decisive.

Sadly, it seems violence is the only way to prevent these pirates from taking hostages and control of ships.

That's how the foodchain works, if somebody has to die for someone to be safe then so be it!

I whole-heartedly agree with Mr. Stolt-Nielsen and wished all shipping lines would take this stance. You would see how quickly piracy in that area would end.

I agree, kill them if they make any aggressive approach.

Have mixed emotions. Would probably be a "tooth for a tooth". The pirates would probably do it to all the people they encountered as they did with the two couples several months ago...

The only thing the pirates will respect is an overwhelming use of force.

The pirates are very heavily armed now, GasPasserAB. While they might attain even more powerful weapons, they would no longer have as much an advantage as they currently do.

Any defense is better than no defense. Most of us lock the doors to our house when we are not at home and at night. This won't keep a determined burglar out, but it does make it more difficult. Many people purchase alarm systems, which alert the alarm company and the police should their home or business be broken into, but physically do nothing to stop the break-in. A lot of people have dogs, which alert them of possible threats. Some people posses firearms which further "level the playing field" against those who intend to do them or their family harm.

As it is now, the pirates know that the vast majority of the ships they would attack are defenceless.

Each and every one of us should be prepared to defend our lives and property against whomever might decide thay want them, whatever that might take.

Shipping is caught upon the proverbial horns of a dilemma. At the moment, the ships are unarmed, allowing the pirates to use the minimum of weaponry to obtain an upper hand. Of course, should the freighters and tankers begin to arm themselves, the next step will be for the pirates to obtain bigger weapons. Where does this stop?

Sounds good to me. I agree wholeheartedly with Mr. Stolt-Nielsen. Simply protecting ones property, nothing more, nothing less.
