I have driven Volvo cars most of my driving life. Some 34 years out of 47 years since i first got my driving license. While all of this is nice to have maybe ( I have not driven any of the newer Volvo cars. One thing has characterized the post 1996 cars from other cars: an increasingly complex device with many extra failure points. I am not sure I want something that is so complicated that they are difficult to repair reasonably.

Safety is most important. But in buying a car I also consider sticker price and maintenance costs.

yes these are safety features but they are cash cows for the service department at your friendly local volvo dealer how many times do you need parallel park assist? i maybe would use it 2-4x a year so not worth it lane departure assist, put down the phone and drive so this shouldnt be necessary, distance alert, slow down!, not needed now the ones i like but still arent needed and i dont have stability and traction control blind spot monitor and that crash warning thing can all be useful but still NOT NEEDED! my 2000 xterra has none of that stuff listed above and i still feel safe in it as it is acceptable crash test rating and i know how to drive put some blind spot mirrors on side view mirrors and walla safe

I prefer other vehicles but it sounds like a comfortable ride -- one of my primary concerns.

The Volvo XC60 may take it to the next level but it's still a Volvo! I will drive my current vehicle into the ground before buying anything new, used, EV, Inbred, diesel, hydrogen, alternative fuel, CNG, concept or anything else. OR renewable energy from solar, tidal, hydro, thermal, tidal and/or nuclear. Whatever the size or shape of the vehicle, Produce and ‘Drive’ vehicles with high MPG, are very reliable, have a ‘reasonable’ cost and a good ‘value’ for the money. Consider using other forms of less expensive transportation to lower your cost, if possible. The price of fuel at the pump is too high! 12/22/2012!

> > > srchr “proof is in the pudding” < < <
This is probably TMI, but, here goes…
"The principal trouble with the proof is in the pudding is that it makes no sense. What has happened is that writers half-remember the proverb as the proof of the pudding, which is also unintelligible unless you know the full form from which the tag was taken, and have modified it in various ways in unsuccessful attempts to turn it into something sensible. They wouldn’t make this mistake if they knew two important facts. The full proverb is indeed the proof of the pudding is in the eating and proof has the sense of “test” (as it also has, or used to have, in phrases such as proving-ground and printer’s proof). The proverb literally says that you won’t know whether food has been cooked properly until you try it. Or, putting it figuratively, don’t assume that something is in order or believe what you are told, but judge the matter by testing it; it’s much the same philosophy as in seeing is believing and actions speak louder than words." http://www.worldwidewords.org/qa/qa-pro1.htm

long time ago I owed a Ford 1950 (inherited from my grand pa), made of hard steel from the scraps of the tanks from WWII... never had a safety issue - once I hit a light pole... not even a scratch in the car, but the pole was destroyed... now we are making cars with light materials in order to obtain better mileage, at a cost of our safety...

Will be priced to high for the average person and cost a bundle to have repaired when something goes wrong. Not for me.

"The insistent trilling sound that comes on if you veer slightly out of your lane can get annoying after a while..."
Well, maybe the author should learn how to keep his vehicle in his own lane, that way he wouldn't have heard the insistent trilling sound and he wouldn't have been annoyed.
I'm annoyed by people that can't stay in their own lane, and if they have to endure an insistent trilling sound to remind them to stay the hell in their own lane I say put them in all vehicles.

I wouldn't trust any electronic device to know better than my own eyes. What concerns me is the elderly will now think they should stay on the road. YIKES!
