To your question on the Volt. From what I read about mountain mode, it does not put extra juice in the battery (unless already about dead), it simply won't let it get as low before the ICE kicks in so it will have extra power if needed up hill. GM wants to minimize charging the battery with gas because it's cheaper to buy electricity off the grid. (Free if you have wind or solar at home.)
