Warning about auto warranty offers

NBC12 -- RICHMOND, VA (WWBT) -

Maybe you've gotten one of those car warranty expiration offers in the mail. Consumer advocates say many of them are traps, attempts to get you to sign up for something you may not need or you could end up with little coverage. The pitch, your car warranty is about to expire and they can provide coverage. Michael Allen, with Virginia Auto Dealers Association says be suspicious. He says, "If you see and envelope and you can't tell who it is from, that should send up a

I received several of these after purchasing my vehicle. They all went in the trash. Anything with my name and address went to the shredder. I don't accept offers from cold calls, mail offers or e-mail offers from sources I don't know.

Mostly just 2 scam people - companies that do the hard sell to force you to sign up by making you think you have to . . . and that they are affiliated with the dealers and manufacturers

Tigerpaw46 - What I meant was not directed at the dealers. I have generally gotten great markdown / deal and bought from dealer at time of car purchase. I have gotten my money's worth. I was speaking about the 2 large after market companies that start sending "your warrantee is about to expire" letters. One car, (purchased used with no warrantee) I continued receiving these "about to expire" letters regularly well into the 14th year into the car's life. My next car, I started receiving these letters starting 9 months after my new car purchase when I already had a 7 year / 75k mile warrantee.

That is why I call it a scam - or maybe cold calls, high pressure tactics, and deceptive communications might be a bit kinder description

Maintain your car properly and be alert for recalls. Extended warranties are all ripoffs, in my not so humble opinion.

True some are scams. But the Auto dealers get a big kickback if they sell you a maintenance agreement. That also raises the insurance cost of the warranty you get and sometimes you can buy a policy from the exact same insurance company that the dealer is using.

Consumer Reports has long shown that almost ALL extended warranties are a rip off for the consumer, and a good deal for the seller.
